Car Insurance in North Carolina: What Drivers Need to Know
North Carolina minimum auto insurance requirements
Every vehicle registered in North Carolina must carry continuous liability insurance. For policies written or renewed on or after July 1, 2025, the state minimum is $50,000 for bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, and $50,000 for property damage (often written as 50/100/50). North Carolina also requires uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage on most policies, so you are protected when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance.
Letting your coverage lapse is costly here. The NC Division of Motor Vehicles is notified when a policy cancels, and an uninsured lapse can bring civil penalties, restoration fees, and even suspension of your license plate. As your broker, we watch renewal dates and shop replacements before a lapse can happen.
Why the minimum is rarely enough in NC
North Carolina is an at-fault state that follows contributory negligence — one of the strictest rules in the country. If you are found even slightly responsible for a crash, you may be unable to recover damages from the other driver. That makes your own coverages, like collision, medical payments, and strong underinsured motorist limits, especially important. A single serious accident on I-40, I-85, or US-52 can easily exceed a 50/100/50 policy, leaving your savings and future wages exposed.
For most families we recommend liability limits of at least 100/300/100, matching UM/UIM limits, and an umbrella policy if you own a home or have significant assets.
How NC insurance points (SDIP) affect your rate
North Carolina uses the Safe Driver Incentive Plan (SDIP). Certain traffic convictions and at-fault accidents add insurance points, and each point raises your premium by a set percentage for three years. Points are separate from your DMV license points. Because carriers apply discounts and surcharges differently, shopping multiple companies is one of the best ways to keep costs down after a ticket — and that is exactly what an independent broker does.

Popular discounts for North Carolina drivers
Because North Carolina auto rates are filed through the NC Rate Bureau, the base rate for a given driver can look similar from company to company — the real savings come from discounts and how each carrier applies them. Common options include multi-policy (bundling home or renters with auto), multi-car, good student for drivers under 25 with a B average or better, driver training for newly licensed teens, paid-in-full and paperless billing, anti-theft devices, and telematics programs that reward safe driving habits. Some carriers also offer accident forgiveness and lower rates for drivers with long, clean records.
Adding a teen driver is one of the biggest jumps in cost most NC families face. We help you compare how each carrier rates young drivers, which vehicle to assign them to, and which discounts apply, so you can keep your family protected without overpaying.
